Aside from letting in light and air into your home, windows can also contribute greatly to your home’s aesthetics, comfort and energy efficiency. That’s why you’ll want to make sure they’re in tip-top shape no matter the season. This means unlearning some of the common bad habits involved with window cleaning and maintenance.

4 Bad Window Habits You Need to Unlearn
  1. Not cleaning the tracks: If you have sliding windows in your home, take the time to check their tracks. Dirt, hair and other small debris can build up along these tracks, allowing them to stick or jam. To ensure their smooth operation, make sure to keep this area of your sliding windows clean.
  2. Not replacing your windows promptly: Putting off a window replacement can lead to a number of problems, from compromised security to significant energy loss. So, it’s important to replace your windows when repairs won’t do anymore.
  3. Being careless with window cleaning: Clean your windows; not wash them. Otherwise, the runoff will seep into the window frames and into the walls. Instead, use a bottle filled mild cleaning solution, which you can wipe off with a soft cloth. Avoid cleaning your windows on a sunny day because the cleaning solution will dry too quickly, leaving streaks on the glass that are difficult to get rid of.
  4. Using a storm window with a Low-E window unit: Low-E (low-emissivity) refers to a coating used in window glass. It helps reduce heat transfer into your home by reflecting the sun’s heat back to the outside. But when you install a storm window on top of a Low-E window, the heat will remain trapped in the space between, rendering the energy performance of the glass ineffective.
