Not all windows fit all homeowner preferences, and some windows are far better for certain home styles and the local climate. But how, exactly, can you pick the right style for your property? Is there a foolproof guide that indicates that “this window is far better for this climate and house style than the other one”? We go over which windows are recommended for different types of properties.
An Introduction to 4 Major Window Styles
Double-Hung Windows
Double-hung windows are one of the two most common types (the other being casement windows). This type has two sashes that slide up and down a vertical track – some even have tilting sashes for easy cleaning. Most modern ones also sport muntins or grilles, which make them a fine choice for traditional or Colonial home styles. From a functional standpoint, they’re also great for ventilation, making them ideal as kitchen or bedroom windows.
Casement Windows
The other most popular window style, casement windows act like hinged doors. They usually come in pairs, pivoting from opposite side hinges. Due to their nature, they often have more glass area, offering more natural lighting. Their operation also allows more ventilation than even a double-hung window as you can use their orientation to direct ventilation into and out of the room. Contractors often recommend them for ventilation in attic areas.
Sliding Windows
Sliding windows are similar to double-hung windows, only that they slide along a horizontal track. These offer the most natural lighting and are lighter than most other types. They are particularly effective in mid-century and contemporary homes.
Picture Windows
Picture windows, also known as fixed windows, are inoperable windows – which mean they can’t be opened. These are meant as decorative fixtures, hence the name. These are great where lighting is important, but not ventilation. They can even be used for privacy when their glass is frosted, such as for bathrooms.
