Caulk is commonly used to seal gaps and fill cracks around your home’s exterior, doors and plumbing. While caulking your siding seems a fairly straightforward process, there are things you need to consider before doing this project.

Type of Caulk

Caulks are mostly silicone, latex or a combination of the two. They can either come in a squeeze tube or a cartridge. A cartridge and caulk gun provides a more continuous bead than a squeeze tube, which is preferable for smaller jobs.

Latex caulk is easier to apply or replace, and it’s possible to paint it. This type of caulk is easy to clean with soap and water and best used for constant gaps. On the other hand, silicone caulk can be difficult to replace and not all kinds can be painted. However, it’s more flexible and less susceptible to damage from extreme temperatures and sunlight. Silicone caulk also lasts longer than latex and ideal for expanding gaps.

When Not to Use Caulk

It’s not a good idea to caulk wood siding because this material naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes. Using caulk on wood siding will prevent the natural movement of the panels, which can result in extensive exterior damage.

You shouldn’t also use caulk on fiber cement siding, especially if there’s metal flashing underneath it. The piece of metal acts as a waterproofing layer for fiber cement, and caulking will defeat its purpose. Another thing you shouldn’t caulk is trim boards if they are on top of your siding’s surface.
