One of the most common causes of gutter failure is corrosion. Knowing what causes gutter corrosion can help you make informed decisions in minimizing, perhaps even preventing, gutter corrosion.

Exposure to Air and Moisture — Gutters are typically made of galvanized steel, the same type of metal used for building standard standing seam metal roofing. Its zinc coating provides protection against oxidation. However, this protective layer can get worn out over time; therefore, galvanized steel gutters require repainting or recoating to protect them against corrosion. If your gutters are up for replacement, consider materials, such as aluminum, stainless steel and copper, as they are not as susceptible to corrosion as steel. In fact, bare copper gutters are actually preferable as they develop a beautiful green patina over time.

Galvanic Corrosion — Galvanic corrosion occurs is an electrochemical process, where contact between two different metals in the presence of an electrolyte like water leads to galvanic corrosion. This is the reason why exterior components, such as windows, roofs and gutters, have to be installed with specific types of fasteners. For example, copper reacts with steel so using copper fasteners on galvanized steel gutters would result in corrosion.

Handling and Installation — Skilled installers take the utmost care in making sure the gutters arrive at the installation site safe and sound. Dents and dings may strip protective coating from the gutter material and expose it to the elements. Seamless gutters are less likely to be damaged from handling as they are transported as rolls of material and are fabricated on-site.

Lack of Maintenance — Gutters suffer daily wear and tear, which makes it important to keep up with scheduled maintenance. Regular inspections, proper recoating and resealing, and timely repairs can help minimize corrosion. Investing in low-maintenance options and accessories like gutter protections systems can further improve your gutter system’s resistance against corrosion.
