Identifying Signs of Storm Damage

Storm damage is one elusive roofing problem, not because of how difficult it is, but how tricky it is to actually identify it. Storm damage may also be obvious, or it can lie hidden beneath your roof, which further makes it hard to assess.

Identifying Signs of Storm Damage

In this post, Exterior Building Solutions discusses how to identify storm damage on your roof.

Check the Shingles

The shingles on your roofing are the first things that you need to check when you’ve recently experienced a storm. The most obvious sign of storm damage is if the shingles are missing or have been blown off by the wind. Also, check your gutters. The intensity of the winds may have stripped and blown off the granules in your shingles, and you’ll usually find them collecting in the gutters.

Some signs of storm damage aren’t that obvious. This is why if you want to know if your house needs emergency roof repair, have a professional roofer do an in-depth inspection. Bruises and dents that you may pass off as nothing are actually signs of storm damage. The same goes for cracked shingles or tile roofing.

Leaks

The sudden appearance of leaks and spots of water damage on your roof or attic space also indicates that your home has experienced some level of storm damage. While it’s easy to discount a small leak as something harmless, we recommend addressing it immediately. A leak, after all, can grow in a matter of days or weeks, and will end up costing you a lot in the long run.

Finally, watch out for the more obvious signs, such as physical damage to your roof and its components. Damaged vents, flashings and gutters are all signs that you’ve experienced storm damage – even if the damage is little more than a dent or a bruise.
